What is involved in a hysterectomy?
A hysterectomy is a surgery to remove the uterus or womb. During a hysterectomy, you may have just the uterus removed, or may also have the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and/or cervix removed in addition. The extent of your hysterectomy depends on your illness or condition – the procedure is highly individualized.
What are the different types of hysterectomies?
The doctors at New England Women’s Healthcare may recommend a total, partial, or radical hysterectomy.
A partial hysterectomy involves removing just the upper portion of your uterus and leaves your cervix in place. In some cases, the ovaries are removed during a partial hysterectomy.
A total hysterectomy involves the removal of all of your uterus, including your cervix. Sometimes the fallopian tubes and ovaries are also removed.
A radical hysterectomy is usually only recommended in cases of uterine or cervical cancer. Your uterus, cervix, tissue surrounding the cervix, and upper part of your vagina are removed. The ovaries and fallopian tubes may also be removed.
Why might I need a hysterectomy?
A hysterectomy is sometimes the only way to address specific gynecological conditions. The doctors at New England Women’s Healthcare use conservative treatments first, but when these fail to relieve symptoms or disease, they may recommend surgery for issues that include:
- Cervical or uterine cancer
- Fibroids
- Endometriosis
- Unspecified uterine bleeding
- Uterine prolapse

What can I expect during a hysterectomy?
Whenever possible, the team at New England Women’s Healthcare uses minimally invasive surgical techniques to perform hysterectomies. Minimally invasive techniques mean faster recovery, less pain, less blood loss, and reduced scarring.
The doctors make just a few small incisions in your abdomen and insert small surgical instruments to remove the organs. A hysterectomy may also be performed using a vaginal approach.
You typically need to stay in the hospital overnight following a hysterectomy. It can take up to six weeks to fully recover, but you can expect fewer complications and less risk of infection than you might experience with conventional open surgery.
